Coconut Charcoal Master Box (Master Carton)

A master box, also called a master carton, is the corrugated outer shipping carton that carries coconut shisha charcoal through container freight, stacking, and warehouse handling — 10 kg or 20 kg of charcoal net per box, plain kraft or printed with your brand.

The master box is the outer, structural layer of the shisha charcoal packaging system: it takes the stacking load in the container and the warehouse, so its construction — not the retail print — decides whether cartons arrive square.

Master cartons are taped shut and labeled with the UN 1361 marking, net weight and country of origin before palletizing or loading.

Quick answer

1. Construction: single vs double wall

Ours is corrugated kraft board, produced in single- or double-wall variants.

Master cartons consolidate inner boxes for container export and carry UN 1361 marking, net weight and country-of-origin.

Carton strength is specified by edge-crush test (ECT) rating, burst strength, flute profile, and corrugate weight; these decide how high cartons stack safely during 15–60 days at sea. The exact strength specification for your order's box size is confirmed with the quote.

  • Printed master carton, ready for container loading.
  • The master box carries the stacking load; inner boxes carry the brand.

Single vs double wall

Single-wall corrugate is the standard for palletized loads and shorter routes; double-wall adds a second fluted layer for floor-stuffed containers, humid-season shipments, and high stacks — a heavier box that holds its edges under compression.

The double-wall upgrade is priced per ton as a white-label / custom-print add-on.

  • Double wall adds a second fluted layer for stacking strength.

2. Dimensions & weights

Net weight options per master box: 10 kg or 20 kg of charcoal. Net weight counts the charcoal only; gross weight (charcoal plus packaging) is what freight calculations use, and is confirmed per configuration with the quote.

Weighing finished cartons confirms the net weight printed on the carton before it is loaded.

By net weight, a 20 kg master box corresponds to 20 × 1 kg or 40 × 500 g inner boxes. Exact inner-box counts vary with the inner-box size and briquette shape, and are confirmed per size with your quote.

3. Printing & branding on the master box

Master boxes ship plain kraft (neutral) or printed with your brand. Brown kraft mutes vivid colors, so how full-color artwork prints and which faces print are specified per design with the quote.

Finished cartons rest in a dry warehouse until a container is booked, keeping moisture stable before loading.

4. Loading: strapping, pallets and the 20ft container

Strapping & palletization

Cartons load two ways: floor-stuffed (maximum payload, manual unloading) or palletized on ISPM-15 heat-treated wood pallets for forklift handling. A 20ft on wooden pallets loads only 15–16 tons and is not recommended; palletized loads ship in a 40ft. Load-securing add-ons such as strapping and edge protectors are specified per order.

Palletized loading speeds forklift handling at both ends of the voyage. Floor-loading hand-stacks cartons directly on the container floor to fit the most cargo into each container.

A 20ft container's net payload depends on the briquette shape: 18,500 kg for hexagonal, finger (stix), flat, cube 22 mm, and 19,750 kg for cube 25, 26, 27, 28 mm, with full packaging in 10 kg master boxes. Packed in 20 kg master boxes, a 20ft carries 19,500–20,000 kg net. A 20ft on wooden pallets loads only 15–16 tons and is not recommended; palletized loads ship in a 40ft.

5. Compliance & markings

Every export master box — neutral or branded — is printed with the UN 1361 marking and Class 4.2 dangerous-goods labels (IMDG Code UN 1361 Class 4.2 (spontaneous combustion)), country of origin (Made in Indonesia) and a batch/lot code. Net weight is printed on request. Carriers check these markings before accepting the booking; missing marks strand cargo at the port.

Coconut shell charcoal is UN 1361, Class 4.2; cartons carry the class label and UN number so the shipment clears as correctly declared cargo.

6. Neutral vs branded master box

The neutral master box is plain kraft with compliance markings only — no printing surcharge, fastest turnaround. The branded box carries your artwork; custom sizes are quoted per design. If your boxes need to match retail inner boxes, brand both layers in one white-label run.

7. A View from the Other Side: Isn't a Neutral, Unbranded Carton a False Economy?

Note

The hardest counter from an experienced importer runs like this: a plain kraft carton is a false economy. Retail buyers and distributors judge a brand partly by how its master cartons present on the warehouse floor, and a brown, label-only box reads as a no-name commodity that weakens shelf and re-order pull. Worse, a vendor who cannot publish an ECT rating, burst figure, or outer dimension is asking you to trust that the box is strong enough — on a Class 4.2 spontaneous-combustion cargo that sits 15–60 days at sea. "Confirmed with the quote" is not a spec.

Part of this holds. The presentation point is fair for buyers selling into branded retail channels, where the master carton is part of how the brand shows up at the distributor. And the spec-transparency point is fair on its face: at present this page publishes no carton-strength number, because those fields are not yet filled in our source data. A buyer who needs the ECT figure to satisfy their own insurer or carrier is right to ask for it before booking, not after.

Note

But neutral is neither unprotected nor unmarked. The protective layer is the carton's construction — corrugated kraft, single- or double-wall — which is identical whether the box is printed or plain; branding is print on the outside and changes nothing structural. And a neutral carton is not blank: every export box, neutral or branded alike, still carries the UN 1361 / Class 4.2 dangerous-goods marking, the country of origin and a lot code, all of which carriers verify before accepting the booking. The compliance floor is the same. Because branding is decoupled from configuration, neutral versus branded is a free choice rather than a quality tier: a buyer who wants warehouse-floor presence brands the carton, while a buyer who wants the fastest, surcharge-free turnaround takes neutral — or applies printed box labels as a lower-cost branding step on a plain carton. None of these change how the box survives the container.

The transparency objection is answered by quoting, not hiding: strength is specified per box size and wall type and confirmed with the order, and a buyer can request the ECT, burst, and dimension figures before booking, then request a physical sample master box through the proof-and-sample flow to verify carton quality first-hand rather than on a published sheet. In short, the presentation argument is a reason some buyers choose branded — which this factory fully supports — not a reason neutral is inferior protection or inferior compliance.

Master-box FAQ

What is a master box (master carton)?
A master box — also called a master carton — is the corrugated outer shipping carton that carries packed inner boxes or bulk charcoal through container freight, stacking, and warehouse handling. It is the structural layer of the packaging system: the inner box presents the product, the master box protects it.
What is the master box made of, and how strong is it?
Corrugated kraft board in single- or double-wall variants. Single wall is standard for palletized loads; double wall adds a second fluted layer for floor-stuffed containers and high stacks. Carton strength (ECT rating, burst strength, flute profile, corrugate gsm) is specified per box size and confirmed with the quote.
What master-box sizes and weights do you offer?
Net charcoal per box: 10 kg or 20 kg. Outer dimensions and gross weight (charcoal plus packaging, the figure freight uses) are confirmed per configuration with the quote, since wall type and inner-box mix change both.
How many inner boxes does a master box hold?
By net weight, a 20 kg master box corresponds to 20 × 1 kg or 40 × 500 g inner boxes. The exact count varies with the inner-box size and the briquette shape inside, so per-SKU packing math is confirmed on the product pages and with your quote.
Can the master box be printed with my brand?
Yes. Boxes ship plain kraft or printed with your artwork (AI / PDF, CMYK; die-line provided). How vivid full-color prints on brown kraft, and which faces print, are specified per design. A lower-cost alternative: printed box labels applied to plain cartons.
Do you offer plain or neutral master boxes?
Yes — plain kraft with no printing surcharge and no extra minimum. Neutral is not blank: every export carton still carries the UN 1361 dangerous-goods marking, country of origin and lot code, exactly like a branded box.
What markings are printed on the master box?
Every export box carries the UN 1361 marking with Class 4.2 dangerous-goods labels, country of origin (Made in Indonesia) and a batch/lot code. Net weight is printed on request. These are mandatory on neutral and branded cartons alike — carriers verify them before accepting the booking.
Can I order a custom master-box size, or request a sample?
Custom sizes are quoted per design through the white-label flow. A sample master box can be requested through the inquiry form or the samples page, alongside the digital proof (7 working days) and physical pre-production sample.
