What a sample shipment involves
A 60–90 second walkthrough of a real sample shipment: a 1 kg sample drawn from current production and sealed, the dangerous-goods carton marked and declared as UN 1361 Class 4.2, and a burn test showing the silver-white, low-residue ash. The same process applies to every sample we dispatch.

How to test your sample
A sample tells you something only if every candidate goes through the same checks under the same conditions. These five need a kitchen scale, calipers or a ruler, and the burner and bowl you already use. Run all five on every sample, write the results on the score sheet, and compare the samples with each other before you compare them with a specification.

Step 1
Look and weigh
Check size and weight across 10 pieces before you light any. Measure each piece with calipers or a ruler and weigh it, then note the lightest and the heaviest, and any chipped edges, cracks or loose dust in the bag.

Step 2
Drop test
Drop every sample from the same height onto the same floor. Measure the height, note the floor, drop each piece once and count how many stay whole, chip or break. The result depends on the height and the floor, so use it to rank your samples against each other: it compares only with drops made the same way.

Step 3
Ignition
Time each sample to full glow on the burner you normally use. Keep the burner, its setting and the number of pieces the same for every sample, start the clock when the coals go on and stop it when every face glows, and note any cracking, sparking or smell. Damp coal is slow to light and can smoke or spit, and moisture is a laboratory measurement: ours is ≤ 6% for every grade (contractual).

Step 4
Session
Smoke one full session per sample with the same bowl and setup. Use the same bowl, tobacco, foil or heat management device and number of coals each time, and note how long the bowl takes to heat up, how long the heat stays usable, whether it holds steady or needs adjusting, and any taste the coal adds. Our burn time is ≥ 2–2.5 hours by grade (contractual); your setup moves it, so compare samples run the same way.

Step 5
Ash
Weigh the coals before you light them for the session and the ash once it has cooled. Ash weight divided by starting weight, times 100, gives a rough ash percentage; note the amount and the color as well. Our ash bands are Premium 2.5–2.8% · Super Premium 2.0–2.5% · Platinum 1.6–2.0% (contractual): compare your figure with the band for the grade you sampled.

Score each sample against the others in the set: 5 for the best result, 1 for the worst. Keep the measured numbers next to the scores; they say more than the total.
Important
Home results are indicative only
Some ash is always lost to the foil, the tray or the air, so a home ash percentage is a rough guide, not a measurement. A coal also burns differently in a bowl than on a grid, so ignition time, burn time and ash all move with the setup. The measurement that governs is the Carsurin laboratory report that ships with every container.

How sample shipping works — we handle it
Coconut shell charcoal is classified as UN 1361, Class 4.2 (self-heating). That sounds like a hurdle — it isn't, for you. We prepare the Class 4.2 dangerous-goods declaration and documentation and dispatch the same day. You simply receive the box.
Sent by air, this material moves as declared dangerous goods under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations through an approved courier account. We handle that declaration; or, if you prefer, you can book the pickup on your own courier account and we hand over a compliant, labelled package.
